Thousands of Argos customers could have problems getting gifts they’d paid for after technical problems brought down the company’s computer system this weekend.

If you were buying online or in store at Argos, you could have found that your order didn’t actually go through although you may have been charged. Customers are currently attempting to contact Argos to get their money back on any deliveries that couldn’t be fulfilled – but if you’re in this situation, what protection will you have? Can you claim money back for technical problems? Let’s take a look at how you could protect yourself when you’re shopping this Christmas.

Charged wrongly?

Argos had technical problems as it had recently launched big discounts on many electrical goods and children’s toys and with the first big shopping weekend of the Christmas season, it does seem that the IT system just couldn’t cope with all of the customers. This meant that although customers had expected and paid for same-day delivery, some orders didn’t turn up.

The retailer says it’s currently contacting any customers who had problems while the computer system was down and had promised to resolve any issues, meaning customers should be able to get a refund or their purchases will be delivered.

If you’ve had technical problems when shopping at a large and reputable retailer like Argos, it’s likely that you won’t have any problems getting your money back for goods that were never delivered. However, if you had problems when buying something online or from a smaller store, you could struggle to claim your money back if you can’t get in touch with them.

Using a credit card

One way you can make sure your purchases are protected this Christmas is by using a credit card to pay for goods. When you use a credit card to shop, you’re protected by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. This states that for any purchases you make using your credit card for items worth between £100 and £30,000, if you are unable to claim your money back from the company you bought it from (perhaps because they have gone bust for example) then you can claim the money back directly from your credit card provider.

You don’t have to cover the full cost of purchases to be protected by Section 75 – just as long as the item costs between £100 and £30,000. Just make sure you don’t borrow any more on your credit card than you can afford to repay as missing or late credit card payments can lead to a serious credit problems in the medium to long term and you could be hit with additional interest and charges.
