Common questions

What is a credit card?

A credit card lets you borrow as you spend and then pay off the balance at a rate you can afford. While a loan pays you an agreed sum of money that you pay back at a set sum and set interest rate each month, a credit card gives you more flexibility.

You can spend what you want up to your agreed credit limit. Each month, you must make at least the minimum payment, but you can pay more if you can afford to. And if you clear your balance in full each month, you won’t have to pay any interest.

What information do I need to apply for a credit card?

Lenders will ask you a variety of questions before deciding whether to offer you a credit card. Here at Ocean, we’ll ask you for a few personal details, such as your address history for the past two years, employment status, annual income and whether you’re a homeowner.

How do credit cards work?

When you spend with a credit card, you’re borrowing money. Because it’s not your own money, your lender is entitled to charge you interest if you don’t clear your outstanding balance at the end of the month.

To avoid interest building up, it’s a good idea to pay off your balance in full at the end of each month. If you don’t do this, you’ll be charged interest on the balance that’s left.

If you miss any of your payments, you’ll have to pay interest and (depending on the lender) you’ll be charged. Your lender could also freeze your account so you can’t spend any more.

Late and missed payments affect your credit history. This makes it harder to borrow in the future.

What are the benefits of a credit card?

Not managing your credit card can harm your credit rating. But using your credit card responsibly, has a number of benefits.

  • If you pay your monthly balance off in full, credit cards offer a way of borrowing money with no extra cost.
  • A credit card lets you pay for expensive purchases and pay this back in affordable monthly sums.
  • Purchases over £100 but less than £30,000 are protected
  • A credit card can help you to build your credit history.

I’ve been declined for credit before - does this mean Ocean will turn me down?

Not necessarily. Here at Ocean, we specialise in offering credit to people with less-than-perfect credit histories. So you may be accepted even if you have a bad credit history.

We understand that everyone’s circumstances are different, and that’s why we’ll treat you as an individual. If we can help, we will.

Once we receive information from you and the credit reference agency, we make a decision on whether or not to accept your credit card application. Our QuickCheck tool tells you in 60 seconds whether you’ll be accepted for an Ocean credit card.

Can a credit card help me improve my credit score?

If you use your credit card responsibly - make at least your minimum payment every month, and stay within your credit limit - it could help to improve your credit score.

What will my credit limit be?

The Ocean Credit Card comes with an easy to manage credit limit of £200 to £1,500. This lets you keep tighter control of your spending compared to credit cards with higher limits.

The exact credit limit you get will depend on your own circumstances and credit history.

Can I get a credit card if I’m self-employed?

You may be eligible for an Ocean credit card if you’re self-employed. However, it can be harder to borrow in general if you work for yourself, as some lenders worry that not having a fixed income means you’ll struggle with your monthly payments.

Here at Ocean, we understand that being self-employed doesn’t mean you’re an unreliable borrower. When you apply for our credit card, we’ll consider your employment status and average income along with a range of other things when we look at your application.
