Don’t waste your space! 2 DIY ideas to spruce up your backyard
Everyone writes about what you can do with your garden, but what about those poor old back yards? Many homes in the UK have small, paved outside areas that are often neglected. So, we’ve two easy ways you can spruce up your yard.
1. Give it a good clean
This may sound like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how a simple clean-up can make your backyard seem so much more inviting. And you don’t have to spend a fortune on cleaning stuff either. If you’ve got stone flags or paving slabs, all you need is a bucket of soapy water and a stiff yard brush. Standard washing-up liquid is fine and there’s also no need for hot water either. If you have any stubborn stains or lichens to remove, a mild bleach solution should do the trick.
Once you’ve cleaned the stone flags you can keep them that way by using a sealant. It is a little investment, but it’s totally worth it. If you need more help on cleaning your paving or you have other maintenance issues, Paving Expert can help.
2. Give it a lick of paint
Painting your fences, walls and wooden windowsill has a number of benefits. First, painting external woodwork protects the surfaces from weather damage, which can cause them to rot if you’re not careful. Painting metal and iron structures, like gates, will help protect them from corrosion and rust. Do this every two to three years, and you’ll extend the life of wooden fences or metal structures quite considerably. And this is way cheaper and quicker than having the fence or gate replaced or repaired.
But keeping the outside protected from the weather is only one benefit. A lick of paint transforms a grotty exterior into something fresh and bright in a matter of hours. If you choose your paint colour wisely, white usually works best for this, you’ll make a small space seem bigger straight away. But, there’s nothing stopping you from choosing any colour you like, why not pick something to coordinate with your flower containers?
Now that you’re backyard is a clean, bright place, the possibilities of what to do with it are endless. Get yourself a BBQ, hang some cute fairy lights or fill the space with fabulous containers overflowing with fresh flowers and strawberries.
