Parents in the UK could receive up to £150 to pay for school uniforms. If you’re eligible, we explain how you can apply before the deadline.
Thousands of parents could benefit from a one-off school uniform discount. We explain how it works and how you could apply.
What’s this story about?
As part of the Education Act 1980, the School Uniform Grant offered support to help lower-income families manage their budget. When parents buy educational supplies, the grant can be used to put towards school costs.
While grants are still available for lower-income families living in Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland, it’s no longer a legal right in England. However, you could still receive support from your local council instead.
If you are living in part of the UK that offers grants (and they haven't been scrapped in your local area), you must be a low-income parent receiving one of the following:
Job seeker's allowance (income-based)
Child tax credit - if you’re not entitled to working tax credit
Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
State pension (if it’s your sole source of income)
Support under Part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
How does this affect me?
With the summer holidays coming up, you may need to fork out for new school supplies for your kids before September starts.
If you fit the criteria, you could receive anything up to £150 from the council to put towards things like a new school uniform.
The amount you receive will differ depending on where you live; for example, if your child lives in Islington you could receive a one-off £150, whereas York residents will receive £70.
Be sure to apply with your council before the deadline of 31 July. If you live in Scotland or Wales, this deadline may differ – as they offer a different kind of school grant.
If you live in Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland, head over to GOV.UK to see if you can receive a grant.
Living in England? Check if your local council offers help by popping your postcode in here. If your council does offer support, you’ll need to apply before 31 July.
If you’re eligible, you’ll receive the cash by cheque which you can pay into your bank or building society.
