Deals of the week - how to save money this May

author: Helen Fox

By Helen Fox

More and more of us are on the hunt for deals to help us save money wherever we can.

We’ve rounded up some of the best deals available this May to help you cut costs and enjoy a few treats:

Free tickets to top attractions

Merlin Entertainment, who are the brains behind some of the UK’s top attractions, have teamed up with Kellogg’s to offer free adult tickets on a whole host of days out when you buy at least one other full-price adult or child ticket. It’s effectively a two-for-one and can make for a great-value way to enjoy a normally expensive day out.

All you need to do is look out for the promotion when you’re buying cereal or other Kellogg’s snacks and follow these instructions to redeem the offer. You’ll need to take the original voucher from your Kellogg’s pack when you visit, too.

The attractions you can visit with this deal include:

  • Alton Towers
  • Blackpool Tower
  • Chessington World of Adventures
  • The Dungeons
  • Legoland
  • Madame Tussaud’s
  • Sea Life Centre
  • Thorpe Park
  • Warwick Castle
  • Shrek’s adventure
  • The London Eye
  • The Bear Grylls Adventure

50% off at Pizza Express

If you’re thinking of dining out at Pizza Express this month, then this is the deal for you. Until 29th May, Pizza Express are offering most of their pizzas at half price. This includes Classic, Romana and Leggera pizzas, as well as gluten-free and vegan options. There’s no minimum spend either, so you don’t have to order the priciest pizza to get the saving. The offer is available all day every day, at all Pizza Express restaurants around the country.

Fancy a slice of this action?

  • Before you head out for a meal, download the free Pizza Express Club app
  • Sign up to become a Club member
  • When you arrive at the restaurant, check-in using the app and enter your table number
  • When it’s time to pay, choose the 50% discount offer in the app before settling up

Joining the Pizza Express Club comes with other perks, too. On your first visit as a Club member, you’ll get a portion of free Dough Balls (yum!) and you can also collect pizza stamps to earn rewards like free side dishes, birthday treats and free kids' meals. You can collect stamps every time you dine in, order for collection or delivery, or even buy a Pizza Express pizza in the supermarket.

However, this deal is limited to one pizza per Club member, per day. So, if you’re dining with a group, for all of you to get a half-price pizza, you’ll all need to be members of the Pizza Express Club and have followed the instructions above to claim the deal. If this isn’t possible – for example if you’re the only adult eating with children – then the discount will only apply to one pizza, of your choice, in your order.

Save up to £12 at Lidl

The rising cost of living is hitting all aspects of life, not least our groceries. Turning to budget supermarkets is one way of combatting the cost, but Lidl have gone one step further to help you save. New and existing users of the Lidl Plus app can now receive coupons to help towards your grocery bill.

If you spend £50 in Lidl in a month, you’ll get a coupon for a free in-store bakery item like fresh bread. Spend £100 (the equivalent of £25 a week) in a month, and you’ll get a £2 money off coupon to redeem on your next shop. Spend £200 (or £50 a week) in a month and you’ll also get a £10 money off coupon, making the total possible monthly saving £12 and a bakery freebie!

You’ll need to scan your Lidl Plus card each time you shop and can then use the app to track your spending and see how close to your next coupon you are.

It’s worth bearing in mind that Lidl will measure your spending by calendar month from start to end, so if you join and start spending mid-month, any progress you’ve made towards coupons will be gone when the next month begins.

Cheap kids cinema tickets at Vue and Cineworld

Finding things to keep the kids entertained at weekends and during school holidays can be tricky at the best of times, but especially when spending as little as possible is also a factor!

That’s why Vue’s Mini Mornings and Cineworld’s Movies for Juniors are such a great idea. Both discount ticket schemes run in the mornings at weekends and during school holidays – perfect for half term at the end of May – and allow you to watch a family-friendly film for much less than the standard ticket price.

How it works at Vue

At Vue, children aged 2-12 can get Mini Mornings tickets for just £2.49 when booked in advance online, or £3.49 in-person on the day. What makes this deal even better is that accompanying adults get in for the Mini Mornings price, too. So, as long as there’s at least one child in your group, everyone will pay as little as £2.49!

How it works at Cineworld

Movies for Juniors at Cineworld is very similar to Mini Mornings. Children aged 14 and under get tickets for £2.50 each, as do accompanying adults. So again, as long as there’s at least one child with you, everyone gets in for £2.50 per person.

Some Cineworld cinemas also offer Premium Movies for Juniors on the latest releases, tickets for which are priced at £5.50 each.

If you book online, there is a 75p per ticket booking fee, so you might be better off buying your tickets when you get to the cinema to get the best price.

At both cinemas, you’ll be limited to 2D screenings, and the films you can go to watch with discount tickets may vary from cinema to cinema. So, it’s always worth checking the listings before you book!

Swap Clubcard points for a Railcard

If you have a Tesco Clubcard, you can now swap £10 worth of points for a National Railcard. Not only does this represent a £20 saving on the normal cost of a Railcard, you’ll also save on any train tickets you buy with your Railcard once you have it. So it’s a great deal now, and for the year ahead!

You can use your Clubcard points to buy any of these Railcards:

  • 16-25 Railcard
  • Family & Friends Railcard
  • Senior Railcard
  • Two Together Railcard
  • Disabled Person’s Railcard

It’s a good idea to check the Railcard website to understand the limitations of each Railcard before you buy one, to make sure you’ll get the use out of it. For example, the Two Together Railcard can only be used when the two adults named on the Railcard travel together. You can’t use it with other people, and you can’t use it when travelling alone.

Ready to get on board?

  • In your Clubcard account, select the type of Railcard you want from the offers available
  • Select the amount of Clubcard points you’d like to exchange – remember, you’ll need £10 of points to pay for a Railcard
  • Complete your order and look out for two emails: a confirmation email, and another email containing your Partner code
  • Click the link to redeem your code and enter it when you’re asked to

Depending on the Railcard you choose, you may need to provide proof of your age to confirm your eligibility, as well as a digital, passport-style photograph for your card.

Take advantage of Tuesdays

Lots of brands run special offers on Tuesdays to give you a mid-week pick-me-up. It’s worth signing up for the mailing lists of brands you like to find out if Tuesday deals are something they offer, or if they have offers on other days of the week. Then, you can keep an eye on what deals come up and cash in when you spot a bargain you fancy.

These are a few of our favourite regular Tuesday offers:
