With the cost of living sky-high, finding even small ways to save has never been more needed.

We’ve picked our favourite grocery apps that can help you save when you shop!

CheckoutSmart

CheckoutSmart is a thrifty app that allows you to claim cashback on selected items. You’ll find it’s regularly updated with a wide range of offers on everything from teabags to cereal to vitamins, with some offering 100% cashback – so you’re basically getting stuff for free! CheckoutSmart has teamed up with Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda and more, so wherever you shop, you're bound to find offers you can get cashback on.

So, how does it work? Simply buy the products that are on offer, taking care to:

  • buy the right brand, product and size
  • check the variety or flavour is included in the offer
  • make sure the offer is available at your chosen supermarket - some are limited!

Then, snap a pic of your receipt or delivery note and upload it to the app. Add your PayPal or bank account details and once you meet the minimum payment threshold, you can request your payout. However, if you request payments of less than £20, you'll incur a 5% processing fee. Payments of £20+ have no fees. So, it might be worth saving up your cashback to pay yourself when it's fee-free!

You can find out more and download the app here.

Shopmium

Shopmium is similar to CheckoutSmart – it offers a range of items you can claim cashback on. You shop as usual, and then upload a snap of your receipt or delivery note to claim your cashback.

Shopmium claim that they have offers on over 2,500 brands and products, with new offers added every week. Like CheckoutSmart, they've teamed up with all the major supermarkets. When you find a deal you like the look of, you can check under "Nearby offers" to find the closest place you can discover the offer. Some offers are limited to certain supermarkets, or can only be redeemed in-store or online, so it's worth checking to make sure you're not caught out.

On top of all this, you’ll get a code for a free welcome treat when you sign up. Need we say more?

mySupermarket

mySupermarket should be every shopper’s best friend. Once you've made your shopping list, you can find the cheapest possible deals on each item across 15 shops, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Amazon and Asda. Ideal if you're not fussy about where you shop, and just want to grab your groceries at the lowest possible price.

You can even compare prices when you’re out and about! Just scan the barcode of a product to see if you can get a better deal and it’ll show you where you can find the cheapest offer. But remember, extra travel costs, so you'll need to work out if the saving is worth the detour.

mySupermarket is available on desktop or you can download the app and save on the go.

Bonus: GreenJinn

GreenJinn is the cashback app for grocery brands that are good for you, and for the planet. They work with brands that are known for their sustainability chops, like Innocent, Heinz and Wild. Cashback can go as high as 100% - effectively getting stuff for free - and GreenJinn reckon you could save up to £1,500 a year by cashing in on the savings available. Not bad, right?

Using GreenJinn works similarly to CheckoutSmart and Shopmium - they've partnered with all the major supermarkets so you shop as usual, upload a picture of your receipt to their app, and claim your cashback. Once you've earned at least £1.50 in cashback, then you can transfer it to yourself by PayPal or directly to your bank account.
