We’ve got everything you need to know about Ocean's gadget insurance. Whether you want to see which gadgets we’ll cover, or find out how to make a claim, you’re in the right place.

What is gadget insurance?

Gadget Insurance is a cost effective way of protecting you if your gadgets are accidently damaged, lost or stolen.

It also provides cover if your gadget suffers a mechanical or electrical breakdown outside of the manufacturer’s guarantee period.

What gadgets does Ocean insurance cover?

We cover the following gadgets:

  • E-Readers
  • Digital cameras
  • Games consoles
  • Laptop computers
  • MP3/MP4 players
  • Mobile phones
  • Smart watches
  • Satellite navigation devices (SatNavs)
  • Tablets
  • Video cameras

Any gadget that you insure under this policy must have been bought by you as new or as a re-furbished item. It must also be less than 2 years old.

We can only cover refurbished items which are purchased as new direct from phone network providers and manufacturers. We cannot cover any items which have been purchased from online auction sites or high street retailers.

What is covered by an Ocean insurance gadget policy?

We cover the following:

Accidental Loss

If you accidentally lose your gadget, we'll attempt to replace it with a fully refurbished gadget of the same make, specification, age and condition, but it may not be the same colour.

If a fully refurbished gadget is unavailable, we'll replace yours with an identical new one.

Theft

If your gadget is stolen, we'll attempt to replace it with a fully refurbished gadget of the same make, specification, age and condition but it may not be the same colour.

If a fully refurbished gadget is unavailable, we'll replace your gadget with a new identical gadget. Where only part or parts of your gadget have been stolen, we'll only replace that part or parts.

Accidental Damage

We'll pay the cost of repairs if your gadget is damaged, including a cracked screen or damage caused by liquid. If your gadget can't be fixed, we'll provide you with either a new or fully refurbished replacement gadget.

A refurbished gadget will be of the same make, specification, age and condition, but it may not be the same colour.

Breakdown

We'll pay repair costs if your gadget suffers an electrical or mechanical breakdown outside of the manufacturers guarantee period.

If your gadget can't be repaired, we'll provide you with either a new or fully refurbished replacement gadget. A refurbished gadget will be of the same make, specification, age and condition, but it may not be the same colour.

Unauthorised Use

If your gadget is stolen or accidently lost, we'll reimburse the cost of any calls, texts, downloads and data use made without your permission while the gadget is not barred by the network provider, up to a maximum of £1,000 per claim.

This is subject to the unauthorised usage taking place within 24 hours of your discovery of the theft or accidental loss under this policy.

Is my gadget covered if I travel outside the UK?

Yes, your gadgets are covered worldwide for up to 90 days in any 12 month period.

Do I receive a discount when insuring more than one gadget?

Yes, you'll receive a £2 discount for each additional gadget you insure under your gadget policy.

Can I insure a gadget for other family members?

Yes you can, as long as they are immediate family members and are living in the same household.

By immediate family we mean your mother or father, spouse, civil partner or domestic partner or son or daughter who permanently live with you.

How much are my gadgets insured for?

We'll pay up to the following amounts in the event of a claim for each insured gadget:

Laptops

£2,000 per claim and £2,000 in total for any number of claims arising during any 12 month period

Mobile Phones

£1,000 per claim and £1,000 in total for any number of claims arising during any 12 month period

iPads, Tablets, Games Consoles and any other gadgets

£750 per claim and £750 in total for any number of claims arising during any 12 month period

Unauthorised Use

£1,000 per claim (in addition to the claim for the gadget itself).

Can I choose when my cover starts?

Yes, you can choose to start your cover on the day you buy the policy or any subsequent day within 28 days.

A 14 day exclusion period applies from the start date of your policy. This means that you'll be unable to claim in this period. The 14 day exclusion period also applies if you add an additional gadget to your policy or replace an existing gadget.

The exclusion period only applies to the gadget which is added.

Is there an excess to pay?

You have to pay the first £50 of a claim for any gadget other than a laptop computer.

For a laptop computer, you have to pay the first £75 of a claim.

Does it matter how old a gadget is?

Yes, your gadget must be less than 24 months old, purchased as new from an approved supplier and with valid proof of purchase when the policy begins. It can't have been bought second hand, at auction or from an online auction website.

For laptops we can offer cover for a maximum of 3 years.

How will I receive my policy documents after purchasing a policy?

Your policy documents will be emailed to you immediately after you've completed your purchase.

You can also log into your online account at https://gadget.oceanfinance.co.uk and download your documents from there.

How do I pay for my gadget policy?

Premiums are collected by Direct Debit on a monthly basis.

Can I change the date that my monthly payment is taken?

Yes, you can.

Please just call 0330 102 6851 and the administrator can change your payment date for you.

How do I make a claim?

You can log into your account at https://gadget.oceanfinance.co.uk and register a claim.

Alternatively, you can call 0330 102 6850 to make a claim.

What proof of purchase do I need to retain for each gadget?

You'll need to provide an original receipt, invoice or gift receipt, which includes the details of your gadget.

If you can't provide this, it may mean we can't progress your claim.

What if my gadget was a gift?

You'll need to ask for the original purchase or gift receipt from the person who gave you the gadget.

If you can't provide this, we may not be able to progress your claim.

Gadget Help Guide

In order to cover any gadget with Ocean insurance you'll need to provide us with:

  • Your unique IMEI number if insuring a smartphone
  • Your unique Serial Number if you are insuring any other gadget

You'll also need to provide us with the correct make and model including memory size. The serial number/IMEI number will be numeric or alphanumeric e.g. 9876543210 or A3B2F9EW Depending on what gadget you are trying to insure these numbers can be found in various places:

iPhone

You'll be able to find the IMEI number of any iPhone by opening your keypad and entering:

*#06#

This will instantly display your IMEI number on screen.

Alternatively, you will be able to find the IMEI number on the original box your iPhone came in, or in the phone settings by following these steps:

  1. Enter the settings option
  2. Select the general option
  3. Select the about option
  4. The IMEI number will be labelled as ‘IMEI’

Smartphone

The location of an IMEI will vary depending on which make and model of smartphone you are using. Generally you'll be able to find the IMEI number by going into your devices keypad and entering:

This will bring up your IMEI number instantly. Alternatively, all devices will have the IMEI number viewable in the phones settings or on the original box it came in.

There is no set way of finding out your devices storage capacity as all smartphones var. However, you can usually find it in the devices settings. For example, on a Sony Xperia you would use the following steps:

  1. Go into the settings option
  2. Select the ‘Storage’ section
  3. You will see max capacity labelled as ‘total space’

Laptop

The location of a serial number will vary depending on which make and model of laptop you are looking to insure. Generally you can find the serial number on the computer itself, or on the original box it came in. Serial numbers could be referred to as:

- Serial
- Serial Number
- Serial No.
- Asset Number
- Service Tag
- S/N
For some laptops, the serial number may also be found on the bottom of the laptop or under the battery compartment.

If your laptop is using any windows operating system, you'll be able to find the max. capacity of your gadget by following these steps:

  1. Enter the my computer screen
  2. Right click on your hard drive and select properties
  3. You will see next to ‘capacity’ the space of your gadgets hard drive

For any laptops which aren’t using the windows operating system, the capacity is usually found in the devices settings. However, it would be best to seek advice online if you are struggling to find it.

Tablets

The serial number for your tablet can be found in various places depending on which make and model you have. Generally, the serial number can be found on the bottom of the tablet itself. Alternatively, some manufacturers put the serial number inside the cover of the SD card reader.

All devices will display the serial number in the tablet settings or on the original box it came in. Serial numbers could be referred to as:

- Serial
- Serial Number
- Serial No.
- Asset Number
- Service Tag
- S/N

There is no set way of finding out your devices storage capacity as all tablets vary. However, you can usually find it in the devices settings. For example, on a iPad you would use the following steps:

  1. Go into the settings option
  2. Select the ‘General’ option and then ‘about’
  3. There will be an option labelled ‘capacity’

Or, on a Samsung Galaxy tablet, you can use the following steps:

  1. Go into the settings option
  2. Enter the about devices section and then select status
  3. This will be labelled as Serial Number

Games Console

The majority of games consoles will have the serial number on the console itself. This can usually be found underneath near the barcode. However, there are a few consoles that have the serial number printed in more than one place. For example, the Xbox 360 has the serial number printed around the USB port.

Alternatively, all devices will have the serial number viewable in the console settings or on the original box your games console came in. Serial numbers could be referred to as:

- Serial
- Serial Number
- Serial No.
- Asset Number
- Service Tag
- S/N

Do I need to report any theft or loss of my gadget to the police?

Yes, you need to report any theft to the police within 48 hours of discovery of the theft of your gadget. A crime reference number from the police will be required to process your claim.

Lost property needs to be recorded at a reporting service, which is accredited by the police such as www.reportmyloss.com. This allows you to register a lost item and will give you a reference number to submit with your claim.

There may be a small cost involved in doing this, which you will need to pay but we will reimburse if your claim is successful.

Do I need to report any theft or loss of my phone to my network provider?

Yes, you need to report the theft and loss of any Smartphone or Mobile phone to your airtime provider within 24 hours of discovery.

Following a claim, will any replacement gadgets be covered on this policy?

Yes they will be as long as you register them on the MyAccount section at https://gadget.oceanfinance.co.uk.

How can I cancel my gadget policy?

You can cancel your policy within 30 days of the start date or, if later, 30 days of the date you receive the policy document without a charge.

We'll provide a full refund as long as you have not made a claim and do not intend to make a claim.

After 30 days, you may cancel the policy at any time by logging into the ‘my account’ section on the Ocean Gadget website or by telephoning 0161 672 8992.

How can I add or remove a gadget from my policy?

You can add or remove a gadget from your policy by logging into your account at https://gadget.oceanfinance.co.uk. You then need to select the ‘My Policy’ tab, where you can add or remove them.

If for any reason you need any help doing this, you can call 0330 102 6851.

What happens if I miss a Direct Debit Payment?

If you miss a Direct Debit and do not make up this payment within 14 days, your policy will end.

If this happens, we'll write to you to explain how you can make up the payment.

Who is the scheme administrator?

Direct Group Limited is the Administrator of the gadget insurance scheme, working on behalf of the insurer and Ocean insurance to process payments and claims.

Direct Group Limited, is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Firm Reference: 307332.

Who is the insurer?

This policy is underwritten by Lloyd’s Syndicate 4444, which is managed by Canopius Managing Agents Limited.
