Ocean’s cake wonder or cake blunder competition week 2!

Ocean’s cake wonder or cake blunder competition week 2!

* Please note, this competition has now closed. To find out about our current competitions, and to enter, click here >

Did you try your hand at last week’s Charlotte cake in honour of Princess Charlotte? Don’t worry if not, we’ve another chance for you to win this week!

We’ll be running a competition every week for the next couple of months where we’ll be asking you to bake a cake to be in with the chance of grabbing a spot prize up to the value of £20* - we’ve two prizes to give away each week!

Up this week is a classic Victoria sponge. But for extra points, it’s National Smile Month, so why not take it to the next level and bake us a Victoria sponge that’ll make us smile – whether it’s one with a smiley face design, or something funny, we don’t mind!

Like last week, if your attempt goes well, we want to see it and if it’s a disaster, we still want to see it! Both cake wonders and cake blunders will be in with a chance of winning.

Once you’ve baked your masterpiece, upload it to either our Facebook or Twitter page, with the hashtag #cakewonder or #cakeblunder, depending on how well it turns out and we’ll announce the winners on our Facebook and Twitter pages next week.

Here’s a recipe from Baking Mad for this week’s cake, but feel free to use your own!

200g unsalted butter

200g caster sugar

3 eggs at room temperature

200g self raising flour

1tbsp vanilla extract

2tbsp milk

For the filling:

150ml whipped double cream

A handful of strawberries

Here’s how to make it:

Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan or gas mark 5) and prepare 2 sandwich tins by lining them with baking paper.

Cream together your butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.

Add in the eggs, combining each one before adding the next. Add in the vanilla, then sift in the flour and fold in lightly until mixed. Add the milk and give it one final mix.

Spoon the mixture equally into the two tins and bake for around 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.

Once cold, top one of the cakes with the whipped cream, top with the chopped up strawberries and then pop the other cake on top.

And there you go, we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Next week…

If Victoria sponge cake doesn’t float your boat, check back next week when we’ll be embarking on week 3 of our challenge.
